There are many factors that have an effect on keeping your feet warm. Remember the body desires to maintain a proper core temp and thus the hands and feet are the first to get cold. Therefore it is important to dress properly in layers. Preferably starting out with polypropylene or similar underwear and outer layers which allow moist air to be vented. Get wet, get cold. Avoid wearing cotton especially in the under layers. This includes cotton socks. Cotton is a great fabric for indoors or summer, but get it wet, it stays wet, and when wet offers little insulating value. Synthetics, even wet, will offer some insulating capability. Even wool when wet insulates to a minor degree. So keep those cotton tube socks handy for next summer or the gym. The nice thing about layering is that if hot, simply remove a layer, cold add a layer, or when overheated unzip and vent off steam. Fleece is an excellent material as are thin polyester layers...it's not just for Saturday night at the disco anymore. Since most heat lost is radiated from the head, a good hat is important. Good hats keep your ears from freezing and falling off. Keeping your ears intact is of prime importance as they keep your goggles or shades from sliding down too far and most importantly, because usually, skiing is followed by live music...if you truly call yourself a skier that is. Live music is good and is best enjoyed with ears. So wear a good hat...and leave the earrings and jewelry at home or in the range rover. Real skiers are not impressed by sparkle unless it is in the form of fresh powder. Jewelry being metallic will transfer heat and could increase the risk of frostbitten ears. Dress right or be cold.
